What is ID Theft?


Many people have heard of identity theft but are unsure of actually what it is and how to prevent it.

You hear some really horrible stories on the news or read them in the newspapers about people who have had their accounts completely wiped clean via identity theft or the worst case scenario somebody else using your identity and accounts to fund their lifestyle.

So what actually is identity theft?


Identity theft does exactly what it says on the tin. It is when someone steals your personal information such as an account number, name, address or credit card numbers and then uses that information to carry out transactions or carry out illegal activity in your name.

You hear some stories of criminals living their lifestyles on somebody else's name for a very long time not only totally destroying their credit rating and also damaging the individuals reputation. As an example if somebody steals your identity your name and address and declares himself bankrupt this will not only stop you from obtaining things such as a credit card or mobile phone but will also cause a lot of stress to life to get this problem sorted out and your name cleared!

Almost anything you wish to buy on credit or you need to sign an agreement to have the product or service usually involves a credit check, so this will make things incredibly difficult and in the worst case scenario someone actually racks up a massive debt in your name and address and then the bailiffs come knocking!

This is a lot of people's worst nightmare! So you must make sure you're shredding all of the documents that contain any personal details about yourself not only to keep your accounts and details safe but also to protect yourself.

The best way of protecting and destroying any unwanted personal documents is to shred them. It's not just homeowners that protect themselves. Many big businesses use industrial shredders to keep all their clients names and addresses secure and discard of all their personal information properly.
