What are DIN security levels?

If you looking to purchase an industrial paper shredder you may not be sure of the DIN level of security you require shredding paper documents?

Here at shredder-king we thought we would give you a quick guide to Din Security levels, (DIN 32757-1) to help you make the right choice.

Please note here at shredder king we only supply industrial shredders with a DIN rating of 3 and over.

Level 1 GENERAL - LOW SECURITY (DIN 1)

DIN level 1 is usually found in home paper shredders you can use on a day to day basis and offer a basic level of shredding security. Paper shredders at this DIN level will normally shred paper into long strips. To give you some idea if you were to shred a piece of A4 paper it would turn into roughly 40 shredded parts.

Paper shredders at DIN level 1 will shred documents into pieces roughly 12mm (1/2"¯) wide. Paper shredders at DIN level 1 are perfect to shred documents such as envelopes with address on but may not be secure enough shred bank statements, or personal information etc.

Level 2 INTERNAL - Low to Medium Security (DIN 2)

DIN level 2 paper shredders will also shred paper document into strips but are slightly narrower than the DIN level 1 paper shredders.  As a rough guide a sheet of A4 will be shredded into approximately 100 strips. Dimensions of the shredder cuts are 6mm (1/4"¯) perfect for home use or in a small office.

Level 3 CONFIDENTIAL - Medium Security (DIN 3)

DIN level 3 industrial paper shredders will shred paper documents into very narrow strips under 2mm. Some DIN level 3 office shredders have cross-cut blades that will shred paper in very small pieces almost like confetti.

The great thing about cross cut industrial shredders is that it will not only make a very good job of shredding paper documents but also the shredded paper is also a lot easier to condense, so you wont have to empty it as much as a standard strip cut.

Industrial shredders with a DIN level 3 are more than capable of shredding confidential documents including bank statements, utility bills, personal or bank details.

Level 4 SECRET - Medium to High Security (DIN 4)

Industrial shredders with a DIN level 4 have a cross cut action. They will shred documents into pieces of roughly 2x15mm, which is very small. This DIN Level 4 is can be used to shred almost any sort of document to very high standard. It is recommended for use in disrtoying sensitive documents used by such businesses such as law firms or banks, or anyone who does not want the information obtained by a third party.

Level 5 TOP SECRET - High Security (DIN 5)

Industrial shredders with a DIN Level of 5 offer the one of the best cross cut particle sizes available at a size of 0.8 x 12mm.

Industrial shredders at this level are usually found within solicitors or government or council buildings, where confidentiality and privacy are top priority.

Level 6 MAXIMUM - Highest Security

Industrial shredders with a DIN Level of 6 offer the highest level of shredding security. Industrial shredders at this level can shred documents into tiny particles approx 1x 5mm. Industrial shredders offering this level of security are widely recognised as being the most secure way of destroying paper document used by military and government industry's.
