Identity Theft and How to Protect Yourself

One of the fastest growing crimes of the 21st century is identity theft. Criminals will actually go through rubbish to find anything that they can use to clone your identity.

You must be very careful how you dispose of your personal documents such as utility bills bank statements as this can be an absolute goldmine for any criminal.

Protecting yourself from becoming a victim of identity theft is vital and the best way of protecting it is to shred all of your personal documents. Paper shredders are a perfect way of destroying all valuable documents into tiny little pieces of paper making them incredibly difficult and impossible to read. Once you have shredded all your documents required or your shredder need emptying, you must still be careful how you dispose of the shredded items.

High security industrial paper shredders are used in almost every office building and business in the UK and even in some homes. They are an ideal way to shred up all your receipts, credit card statements and cardboard. Some models can even shred CD's almost anything. To help you make a decision whether you should be shredding or just recycling your pieces of paper we've made a short list of documents and may contain your personal or information you don't want to get into the wrong hands.

Bank statements or loan repayments documents.

These contain a huge amount of private information and should definitely be shredded the contain your sort code, your address your account number and all you details of your expenses. This is a vital piece of information you shouldn't let fall into the wrong hands if you do decide to dispose of them please shred them, and carefully dispose of the shreddings.

Credit card and bankcard receipts and statements

These are also incredibly important to shred and not just thrown in the bin they may also contain your sort code digits of your card. Don't think for a minute that just because your bank has been kind enough to blank out the last or not display the most vital information they still can be used for identity theft or fraud. Statements which can be printed directly out of the cash machines must also be kept safe.

Personal checks

If you write a cheque and make a mistake on it or a cheque has been cancelled or in the worst case would have bounced please shred them. As they contain just as much information as a debt/credit card. They also may include your account number and sort code but if you throw away with your signature on your asking the trouble.

Utility bills

Anything from a mobile phone bill, gas or electric bill, they must be shredded to keep your personal information safe. They also contain so much information about yourself not only a name and address but in some cases passwords, account numbers and they really must be shredded and not just thrown in the bin or recycled.

Cards that are out of date

Any card that you own such as your bank card or credit card always has an issue number at the end of the date the cards and replaced by your bank or credit card company.
You can actually buy shredders that will actually destroy things such as credit cards and CDs and floppy disks so if you are concerned you can shred them.
The key thing to remember is that if any document contains anything such as passwords, sort codes, account details, date of birth, mother's maiden names then you must shred them. This will help prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft and help keep your account details safe even if something comes in with your name and address on it such as an envelope just tare the front of it off or cut it off and just shred the little bit don't worry about the whole envelope just shred the name and address.
