Ensure that you oil your shredder on a regular basis. Light oiling will increase the life of your shredder and it will run smoother, faster, and less strain will be put on its motor, cutters, gears, and bearings.
How often should I oil my shredder?
Most manufacturers recommend oiling the cutter once every 30 minutes of accumulative shredding, an easy way to remember is just to oil your paper shredder every time you change the bag or empty its bin.
Cross cut paper shredders require regular applications of shredder oil while a strip cut can go for a longer period of time without decreased performance.
Paper shredders that are used more will need more lubrication. A paper shredder under heavy usage will need oil about once every four hours, while one under normal use will only require oil once or twice a month.
Why should I oil my shredder?
All Paper Shredders need shredder oil to continue to function properly. Paper dust builds up inside the cutting assembly, and after time, this sediment can become packed together like cement. Oil serves to soften this packed dust, which allows the movement of the cutting head to clean itself.
*NOTE: Shredder oil is of a special formulation which leaves no residue on the cutters. Other oils will attract paper dust and in turn clog the cutting head!.
How do I apply the oil?
The procedure for oiling a shredding machine is very simple and can be done by any operator. The oil is packaged in a squeeze bottle and is applied directly onto the cutting head in a fine stream. This is done through the paper entry point. Take 1-2 seconds to oil from one side of the opening to the other. Turn the machine in reverse for about 10-15 seconds to allow the oil to transfer to all parts of the cutting head. The final step is to shred a few sheets of paper to remove any excess oil.
